"100lbs. gained since intake just over a month ago (with still 275+ to go), Nehemiah is doing great and working hard at his impression of a molty raccoon. 😂

It’s not uncommon for horses who are emaciated and immune compromised (therefore having skin/coat conditions) at a season change to “blow” their entire coat before they grow a new one. As they shed out their winter coat, there was nothing growing to replace it as their body is too focused on surviving by keeping vital organs going. Nehemiah has already started growing in tiny, beautiful liver-chestnut colored hairs- it’s just a delayed process from a normal horse growing their summer coat because of the lack of nutrition he had experienced. He thoroughly enjoys his twice-daily curry and brush sessions to help him in the process and makes all the funny faces when we scratch his favorite spots! 🥹
