Grace in the Dust

By Volunteer Session Leader, Matt Gerber
At Freedom Reigns Ranch, we talk a lot about confidence, trust, and boundaries — but some of the most powerful lessons come from the simple, earthy moments. Like giving a horse a bath on a hot Tennessee afternoon.

You rinse away the sweat and mud.
You scrub until the coat shines.
For a moment, that horse looks so clean.
And then — with perfect timing — they wander straight to the nearest dusty patch and roll with absolute joy.
Clean… then dusty again.
It’s hard not to laugh or maybe get frustrated. But it’s also hard not to see ourselves in it.
Because the kids and young adults who come to the Ranch aren’t the only ones learning about grace — we are too. We come to Christ asking to be washed clean from the same old struggles, the same old sins, the same old patterns. We feel renewed… and then somehow find ourselves back in the dust we thought we’d left behind.
But here’s the beauty we get to model at the Ranch:
Christ doesn’t give up on us.
He doesn’t scold or shame.
He doesn’t say, “I just cleaned you.”
He comes close.
He washes again.
He strengthens again.
He loves again.
And as we serve kids who are learning to trust, learning to heal, learning to stand tall — we get to show them that same patient, dependable love. The kind that doesn’t walk away when someone rolls back into the dust. The kind that says, “You’re still welcome. You’re still wanted. Let’s try again.”
Horses roll because it’s in their nature.
Humans sin because it’s in ours.
But Christ restores because it’s in His.
And at Freedom Reigns Ranch, we get to witness — and embody — that restoration every day.
