Of horses and... doughnuts??

Each week at the Ranch it seems that an overarching “theme” emerges that God strings throughout each session. This week “joy” and “delight” were highlighted, and in one moment so perfect and yet so simple, that it could have only been God.

Each week at the Ranch it seems that an overarching “theme” emerges that God strings throughout each session. This week “joy” and “delight” were highlighted, and in one moment so perfect and yet so simple, that it could have only been God.

We were beginning our afternoon sessions on Friday and my first participant was a 14 year old girl that has been coming for about a year now. As I usually do, I casually asked her what she wanted to do today. Normally it’s met with a question back to me, or a response to “ride!” but on this particular day, without missing a beat she responded “eat doughnuts!! but we don’t have any here of course and we’d have to go buy them”. I laughed in disbelief as I told her “actually… we do have doughnuts!”

The day before our amazing farm owners had left a box of doughnuts and told us they were for us to enjoy and until that moment I’d completely forgotten about them. I’m sure Jesus must have been watching this unfold, angels laughing, and a Father’s heart  through joyful laughter say “see! do you see what I did there?!?”

We sat overlooking the North pasture, watching the horses happily much on grass while we each enjoyed a doughnut. Laughing about funny horse memories she’s had at the Ranch, talking about her plans and goals for the rest of the school year and her dreams for her life. About 30 minutes passed and she got a mischievous grin on her face after looking at the remaining doughnut and curiously asked “I wonder if horses like doughnuts?”

In almost a skip out to the pasture, we found out that yes, horses do indeed like doughnuts, and Pogo, our pony, makes some pretty funny faces when he enjoys a sugary treat!

It was pure delight and joy, in an experience so simple, yet so perfect, only God could have planned it!
